Children need practical experience of cooking

Children need hands-on experience in the kitchen to maintain healthy eating habits, according to the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS).Learning how to wash vegetables in the kitchen sink, prepare food and cook healthy meals could help young people to adopt a balanced diet.According to the HSIS, children have the knowledge to eat healthy foods but lack the hands-on training.Dr Carrie Ruxton, nutritionist for the HSIS, said Knowledge of healthy eating amongst children and young people is good, but they dont have the practical experience of shopping for and cooking healthy food to help them convert their knowledge into action.More opportunities are needed for for young people to learn how to cook, she added.A study by the HSIS has revealed that British children risk illness in later life due to a poor diet when they are young.The service found that recommended daily allowances for saturated fat, sugar and salt were often exceeded.ADNFCR-1321-ID-800425924-ADNFCR
