Black mark for Londoners in environmental study

Londoners have been given a black mark in a new national study on environmental concerns. The least environmentally friendly people in the UK belong to the capital with London borough residents producing the most household waste as well as recycling the least, according to a survey by waste disposal experts InSinkErator. The study of 3,000 Britons showed that older generations are the most environmentally conscious, with the over 60s recycling the most and throwing away the least number of bin bags. It revealed that pensioners in the North East of England are the most environmentally friendly people in Britain. Student respondents were identified as being relatively unconcerned about the effect of landfill sites with 48percent of male students admitting that they were not worried about their environmental impact. A total 79percent of both male and female students confessed to regularly disposing of rubbish as general waste when they know it could be recycled. The survey found that red-haired people threw away the highest number of bin bags per week (seven or more) and that females in Wales (53percent) are most likely to own a food disposal unit. InSinkErator UK spokesman Ashley Munden says Its really interesting to be able to pinpoint the specific groups in the UK who are the most environmentally conscious and also those at the other end of the scale who could benefit from some education. I think on the whole, people are more aware of the need to manage their household waste, but are not actively changing their habits. There clearly still is work to be done to assist people with making the best choices for the environment.
