Home design revamps can often be stumped by difficult choices over how to fit a spacious kitchen into tight household space, but basement conversions are now opening up new options, say experts. The Basement Information Centre claimed that it was receiving more and more inquiries as people sought to revamp existing basements and provide greater headroom, or to add new basements under existing properties. Many traditional period houses especially from the Georgian era contain simple basement kitchens, with owners of older houses often revamping the downstairs cooking area to modernise it. However, but the Basement Information centre claimed that others without a basement were looking to expand downwards. Alan Tovey, director of the Basement Information Centre, said Refurbishment is [popular because] the cost of moving is much higher people prefer to stay where they are.If theyve got an existing cellar with limited headroom, theyre sitting on something which probably doesnt have a lot of value and spending some money on it to increase the headroom will increase the value of that space. Mr Tovey added that basements were used by homeowners for a variety of purposes, with kitchens often suited to a below ground setting and many compact sinks, such as Astracasts 600 mm base Echo D1 1.5 bowl undermount fitting snugly in cosy basement-styled kitchens.
