Basement conversions open up kitchen possibilities

People are expanding their homes and creating expansive new kitchen spaces through ambitious conversion projects, it has been claimed. The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) identified loft, garage and basement conversions as a growing trend, citing high property prices as an incentive for people to improve rather than move.Basement conversions often create vast spaces in which kitchens can be installed, serving to relocate cooking areas back to the bottom of the house, where they were traditionally placed.Brian Berry, director of external affairs for the FMB, said There will be a group of people who will be looking to make better use of the space they have, because obviously the housing market is slowing down considerably. The high cost of moving because of stamp duty and lawyers fees means that people are looking to either go into their basement or, what is increasingly popular, get a loft conversion [in order to] add value to the property. Spacious basement kitchens could contain room enough for an expansive kitchen sink and models such as the Carron Phoenix Undermount Double Bowl Kindred model may prove ideal for spreading out washing up and food preparation tasks.
