Are you switched on to kitchen lighting?

The kitchen is probably where we spend the most time, either working at the kitchen sink, preparing food, cooking or entertaining. However, when it comes to lighting, the kitchen is often given the least consideration. Whilst a central pendant lighting might give good general light, you might find that you are forever working in your own shadow, straining the eyes. Whatever the size and shape of your kitchen, the light should come from behind or to the side of where you are working, never from the front. You also need good quality task lighting at the sink, cooker, fridge and worktops. Position mini fluorescent lights, with 8 watt bulbs in warm white, underneath wall units which will spread a good level of light over worktops. Ideally, kitchen light should be as similar as possible to actual daylight. When renovating your kitchen, you will find that modern units and appliances will usually come with built-in lights. Alternatively, you can mix and match pieces from kitchen retailers. Appliances such as cooker hoods come with in-built lighting and units and cupboards can have built-in lights that are triggered when the doors are opened.
