Anti-Hips campaign point to the scrapheap

A movement which campaigns against Home Information Packs (Hips), Splinta, has called for the controversial scheme to be scrapped.Following last weeks statement by housing minister Margaret Beckett that the scheme was not working as well as they had hoped, the government has come under renewed criticism from those opposed to the packs.Splintas founder, Nick Salmon, listed a number of reasons why Hips should be done away with.Margaret Beckett has had the courage - so clearly lacking in her predecessors - to acknowledge that Hips are far from perfect, however she is missing some vital facts, he said.Among the criticism he levelled at Hips, Mr Salmon said no-one was actually interested in the information contained within the packs and that they didnt actually assistant the home buying process, with some owners still in unsold properties who were unable to pay the bills for their Hips, which can cost hundreds of pounds. The criticism comes amid the current slump in the housing market, which has seen the long-term trend of rising house prices reversed as credit restrictions tighten as a result of the sub-prime crisis originating in the US mortgage market.
