1920s kitchens celebrated

A new exhibition in the US is to play tribute to the kitchen accessories of the 1920s.The era that dishwashers first made an appearance and families started to take pride in kitchen design is to be celebrated at the Taneytown History Museum in Maryland.Focusing on the role of electricity and advanced plumbing in the kitchen, Whats Cooking? takes a nostalgic look at how products such as the modern kitchen sink came in to being.Exhibition coordinator Nancy Eyler explained to the Press Association that new kitchen accessories helped to reduce the amount of time women spent on domestic tasks.In the 1920s, the average housewife spent 44 hours a week on meal preparation and cleanup, not counting doing the laundry, sewing and gardening, she said.Closer to home the Design Museum in London features a number of iconic and innovative products from the 20th century.Temporary exhibitions concentrate on a specific aspect of design, while the permanent collection features over 1,000 pieces including kitchen accessories from designers such as Terence Conran.
